Preventing and Caring for Muscle Ache
The start of the spring sports season has many students limping up and down the stairs and gingerly lowering themselves into seats. With important games fast approaching, coaches are pushing their athletes to the edge, causing sore muscles and aching feet. Whipping bodies back into shape can be a painful process, but there are a few lifestyle changes that can help decrease the amount of muscle soreness athletes experience. Bananas are great for before or after a hard workout because they contain large amounts potassium, which helps prevent cramps and muscle ache. Eating foods such as eggs, turkey, or chicken helps muscles recover from rigorous exercise faster because they are a great source of protein. Drinking water is also important. Dehydration can increase muscle soreness and fatigue and can cause headaches. Adequate warm-ups and … Read entire article »

Hockeytown U.S.A.
It is a rare occurrence in sport when an athlete possesses high levels of agility, flawless flexibility, impeccable balance, stellar hand-eye coordination, and brute toughness, where missing teeth are a definite must, and fist-fighting is punished by an insignificant five-minute time-out. This sport is, of course, hockey. Hockey has a rich international history. From the “Miracle on Ice” to the 2010 winter Olympics, hockey has always had a large impact on both American and international society. This is the reason why Michigan loves its Detroit Red Wings. In a city that has been “to Hell and back,” Detroit’s hockey team offers a distinct feeling of celebration and pride to the citizens of Detroit and all … Read entire article »
Class Rings
Every year the freshman class orders its class rings. The meeting for the class rings was held in the cafetorium during the second half of the seminar on Friday, March 18. The company selling the rings this year is Jostens. A nice feature that the company added to their website, www.jostens.com, was the ability to customize the ring to the student’s liking, so everyone’s ring will be unique. With a good imagination, the combinations of rings is endless. The meeting began with a nice animation that broke down the information so that all students could understand what Jostens does. There were many different types of rings: the Achievers ring, the Signature ring, the Heritage ring, the … Read entire article »
Picture Them in Their Underwear…
Book talks, class presentations, or even one-minute summaries of an article read in class can freak out people. Jumping up to do her book talk, Kendra Randolph said, “I don’t even know why I’m nervous, I just am.” That is the problem; most students do not know why they panic, but public speaking is one of the top fears people have. With these helpful tips, when the time comes, it will be possible to get through a presentation. Teachers always say to practice beforehand. While this seems like a huge waste of time, do it! Even if it is only once or twice, having a general idea of what needs to be said will help to … Read entire article »
Better Save Than Sorry
As time passes, teenagers struggle to be more independent, to break out from under their parents’ wings. However, there are several obstacles standing in their way, one of which is the steadily rising price of gas. Most teenagers start driving between their sophomore and senior years of high school. While being able to drive opens up a whole new world with seemingly endless freedom, it also comes with the burden of added responsibility: getting a job, keeping up insurance, and paying for gas. Parents and grandparents often talk about “back in the day” when they did not have to choose between buying food and gas. Maybe it is not quite that bad. At least not yet. Just a … Read entire article »
When Sports Cross the Line…
Death caused by sports injures or other health problem is something no student athlete wants to think about before playing the game he/she loves. Anything is possible, and preparing student athletes may mean the difference between life and death. Wes Leonard of Fennville High School (Michigan) died moments after the game-winning basket that brought his team record to 10-0. Two days later, Matthew Hammerdorfer of Poudre High School (Colorado) died after suffering a heart attack during a rugby match. A week later, Sarah Landauer died of unknown circumstances after running the 200-meter dash at a track meet. Sarah was the only one with warning signs but was cleared to race because she was young, healed … Read entire article »
TEACHER SPOTLIGHT: Mr. Ramsell Doing What He Does
“I used to believe, I mean I still do, if you give something your all, everything you have, it does not matter if you win or lose. Just as long as you risk everything, put everything out there. And I have done that.” (Kevin Costner as Billy Chapel in For the Love of the Game). Mr. Ramsell went to Eastern Michigan University. “Believe it or not, I did not go to college to become a teacher. I went to be a researcher in biology. I love biology, I have a minor in biology, and I can teach it.” It was not until his third year at EMU that he decided he wanted to be a teacher. “It … Read entire article »
Students Get Fewer Class Options in 2012
Administrators have changed the schedule again. There were two plans next year. The first one, which most students wanted to switch to, was to eliminate M-days, add another academic class, and reduce seminar time to two forty-five minute periods at the end of the day on Tuesday and Friday. On days with seminar, other classes would lose ten minutes each. This schedule has many students concerned that their workload will be too much to handle next year with less seminar time. Megan Smith said, “Seminar time is valuable to me because it gives me a chance to ask teachers questions on my homework.” With seminar only twice a week, students’ grades may suffer. For those that … Read entire article »
Read-A-Thon promotes fun, cash prizes, … & reading
On Friday March 18, kids lined up to sign in for Tecumseh High School’s first ever Read-A-Thon. Well prepared with pillows and blankets, their names were checked off the list and seats were taken. Cell phones and back packs were placed in another room so as not to be in the way and to keep distractions at bay. Many students brought books; for those that did not, they just took some from the shelves in the library that had caught their interest. Many went to the bathroom and to get a drink from the drinking fountain. Then it was time to begin. Talking was not allowed and participants were not allowed to stop reading and disagreeing … Read entire article »

There are always two views on anything that happens, even when it comes to Prom. A few people hate going to it; however, most people love the tradition of it. No one really knows what the Prom is going to be like until they go and find out for themselves. The sponsoring junior class spends their time and money so that other students may have a fun and exciting Prom. Students plan their night at the Prom so it can be as perfect as they want it to be.
